Is This the Year You Move? Five Questions to Ask Yourself First

The start of a new year has a funny way of making people look around their homes a little differently. Sometimes everything still fits perfectly. Other times, small thoughts start popping up.

Maybe we need more space.
Maybe we need less.
Maybe this house was right for a season, but not this next one.
If you are even quietly wondering whether this might be the year you move, here are five questions worth asking yourself before you do anything else.
1. Does your home still support your day-to-day life?
Think about how you actually use your space. Not how you thought you would use it when you bought it.
Are you working from home now? Hosting more? Wanting quieter mornings or more outdoor access? A home that once fit perfectly can start to feel off as life changes, and that does not mean you made a bad decision. It just means your life evolved.
2. Are your annoyances small or structural?
Every home has quirks. The key is knowing which ones are manageable and which ones are not.
Paint color is easy. Layout is not. Storage solutions are flexible. Square footage is not.
If your frustration is mostly cosmetic, small updates might be enough. If it feels deeper, it may be worth exploring options.
3. How do you feel when you think about staying?
This question matters more than people expect.
Do you feel calm thinking about staying put for another few years, or does it feel heavy? There is no right answer. Paying attention to your emotional response can tell you a lot about whether a move is something you want or something you feel pressured into considering.
4. What does flexibility look like for you right now?
Moving is not just about where you live. It is also about timing.
Some people want flexibility with finances. Others want flexibility with space or lifestyle. Understanding what flexibility means to you helps shape smarter decisions, whether that leads to selling or staying.
5. Do you want clarity more than commitment?
You do not have to decide anything right now.
Many of my clients simply want clarity. What their home is worth. What their options are. What changes would make sense if they stayed. Clarity does not equal obligation. It just gives you better information to work with.
If this is the year you move, we will figure that out. If it is not, that is just as valuable to know.
